  • Slit lamp biomicroscopy to examine the anterior segment (front of the eye) with a microscope

Depending upon the examination results other diagnostic tests may be necessary (click button for diagnostic tests & treatment)

Intraocular Surgery (Cataract Surgery)

Cataract surgery is performed every Tuesday and Wednesday and some Mondays. It is the most common intraocular surgery performed at the Animal Eye Care Center. Patients undergo surgery in one or both eyes depending upon the need. Intraocular lenses are often placed.

Intraocular Surgery (Other)

  • Iridectomy - Removal or a portion of the iris to eliminate an iris tumor

  • Anterior Lens Luxation - Removal of a lens that has shifted forward. The condition often causes discomfort and glaucoma. A lens that has shifted forward may be vision-threatening and can necessitate emergency surgery.

  • Retinopexy - Laser and/or cryotherapy may be used to seal, or wall off, a small area of retinal detachment. Large detachments or tears require vitreoretinal surgery which is performed by a vitreoretinal surgeon.

  • Intraocular prosthetic surgery - An alternative to eye removal as long as the cornea (front surface of the eye) is not ulcerated or dry. The contents of the eye are removed and a prosthesis is placed within the existing eye. The eye is fairly cosmetic and often maintenance free.

Extraocular Surgery (on or around the eye and commonly performed at the AECC)
